Let me start by saying: I am a complete chicken. I cannot read, watch, or hear scary/horror things. Next: This book was terrifying, thrilling, full of unsuspecting twists, and I now believe in creatures that roam through the night with vigilance. Finally: This story terrified me to my core with something raw and tangible and completely human, and many times I found myself a little too on edge to continue reading. This book and Marie Catherine Hale’s story swallowed me whole and I am in awe of this story and it’s beautiful telling.

Years back, if someone had told me that my mom and I would help to rescue a feral puppy who would tear up our sheets, shoes, pillowcases, kindles, and even a small wooden sign; is terrified of men, water, people in hats/hoodies, trash/plastic bags, fireworks/thunder, and having her nails clipped; has food aggression, separation anxiety, carries her food dish away when we leave the house, will bark at new sounds/people but will always run away and hide, loves to watch her neighbor friends, watches over our house like a hawk, and adores rolling around in the snow…. I would laugh, and maybe call you a liar…

But now? Tonight? When this Siberian Husky + Great Pyrenees is exhausted and carefully climbing up on to the couch with an equally exhausted me to lay her head on my feet? I would tell you "shhh… My baby is sleeping” 💜 Raising this sweet girl to “be a real dog” was a tremendously difficult task that we are still doing to this day, and I would never trade any of it (and especially never her!) for a second 🤟🏻
